{"id":11122,"date":"2020-08-01T00:17:31","date_gmt":"2020-07-31T22:17:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.jochen.hayek.name\/blog-en\/?p=11122"},"modified":"2020-08-07T12:46:58","modified_gmt":"2020-08-07T10:46:58","slug":"ubuntu-vm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.jochen.hayek.name\/blog-en\/2020\/08\/01\/ubuntu-vm\/","title":{"rendered":"my Ubuntu VirtualBox virtual machine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/pragprog.com\/titles\/bhcldev\/\">https:\/\/pragprog.com\/titles\/bhcldev\/<\/a> \u2013 &#8220;Small, Sharp Software Tools&#8221; \u2013 I followed the instructions in chapter &#8220;Creating an Ubuntu Virtual Machine with VirtualBox&#8221;<\/li><li>my host OS: macOS \u2026<\/li><li>I chose to use the current Ubuntu LTS release (20*) as opposed to the 18* one mentioned in the book \u2013 on my 2nd try I surfed to kubuntu.org and download <strong>their<\/strong> ISO image<\/li><li>I chose the minimal installation<\/li><li>the minimal installation works<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Task: resizing the VM window vs. resizing the Ubuntu desktop inside<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>the related magic lives within VBoxGuestAdditions.iso (supporting &#8220;any&#8221; OS and OS flavour)<\/li><li>add VBoxGuestAdditions.iso to the respective VM as optical device!<\/li><li>the respective guest OS will mount the optical device and hopefully autorun &#8220;something&#8221;<\/li><li>because I had chosen the minimal installation, the 1st mounting resulted in complaining about missing utilities resp. packages: <em>gcc<\/em>, <em>make<\/em>, <em>perl<\/em><\/li><li>&#8220;sudo apt-get install gcc&#8221; led to another complaint and the suggestion to execute this:<\/li><li>&#8220;sudo dpkg &#8211;confgure -a&#8221;<\/li><li>now again: &#8220;sudo apt-get install \u2026&#8221; for: <em>gcc<\/em>, <em>make<\/em>, <em>perl<\/em><\/li><li>after rebooting the guest OS: the Ubuntu desktop inside resizes, if you resize the VM window<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Task: get familiar with the Gnome desktop&#8217;s concept of <em>workspaces<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>the Activities button leads displaying &#8220;the Dash&#8221; with thumbnails of the running workspaces<\/li><li>&#8220;the Dash&#8221; lets you reorder the running workspaces<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/help.gnome.org\/users\/gnome-help\/stable\/shell-keyboard-shortcuts.html.en\u2028\">https:\/\/help.gnome.org\/users\/gnome-help\/stable\/shell-keyboard-shortcuts.html.en<\/a><\/li><li>read the desktop&#8217;s help text on keyboard shortcuts!<\/li><li>CAVEAT: maybe I should switch to KDE and Kubuntu instead (as I have used KDE for quite some time now, far more than Gnome):<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/kubuntu.org\">https:\/\/kubuntu.org<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Task: get my banking application running!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>my banking application is implemented in Perl, so for installing Perl modules through the utility <em>cpanm<\/em> install the resp.
