{"id":1982,"date":"2010-11-17T10:12:00","date_gmt":"2010-11-17T10:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.b.shuttle.de\/hayek\/Hayek\/Jochen\/wp\/blog-en\/2010\/11\/17\/observing-the-procmail-logfile\/"},"modified":"2010-11-17T10:12:00","modified_gmt":"2010-11-17T10:12:00","slug":"observing-the-procmail-logfile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.jochen.hayek.name\/blog-en\/2010\/11\/17\/observing-the-procmail-logfile\/","title":{"rendered":"observing the procmail LOGFILE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tI am a fervent user of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Procmail\"><i>procmail<\/i><\/a>, have been such a user, since I found out, that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sieve_(mail_filtering_language)\"><i>sieve<\/i><\/a> is far less available in any such mail environment as mine at my provider&#8217;s site.<\/p>\n<p>I really don&#8217;t know of a lot of others, that also use\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Procmail\"><i>procmail<\/i><\/a>. I think, Axel uses\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Procmail\"><i>procmail<\/i><\/a>\u00a0as well, I worked with Axel like almost 15 years ago at ERNO.\u00a0I only found out, that &#8220;Sven G.&#8221; (a rather prominent open source person living in Berlin) also uses\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Procmail\"><i>procmail<\/i><\/a>, when we had a pasta evening together in my kitchen last Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Observing\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Procmail\"><i>procmail<\/i><\/a>\u00a0LOGFILE is my way of finding out about new e-mail messages, that try to reach me. I think, usually people have a look at their single mailbox (in case they are POP3 users) or at their 5 IMAP folders (just guessing that &#8220;5&#8221;). I have like 50 IMAP folders, and because I quite often toggle the &#8220;READ flag&#8221; of messages back to &#8220;unread&#8221;, observing\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Procmail\"><i>procmail<\/i><\/a>\u00a0LOGFILE and also keeping separate track of important messages in my diary is my way of attempting <u>not<\/u> to lose track.<\/p>\n<p>Now why did I start this article today? Sven G. is a &#8220;<i><span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Procmail\"><i>procmail<\/i><\/a><\/span>\u00a0LOGFILE observer<\/i>&#8220;, too. And by &#8220;observer&#8221; I mean using &#8220;<span>tail -f<\/span>&#8221; on that logfile \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/IYKWIM\">IYKWIM<\/a>.
