{"id":2584,"date":"2008-01-29T11:31:00","date_gmt":"2008-01-29T11:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.b.shuttle.de\/hayek\/Hayek\/Jochen\/wp\/blog-en\/2008\/01\/29\/my-brand-new-eee-pc\/"},"modified":"2008-01-29T11:31:00","modified_gmt":"2008-01-29T11:31:00","slug":"my-brand-new-eee-pc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.jochen.hayek.name\/blog-en\/2008\/01\/29\/my-brand-new-eee-pc\/","title":{"rendered":"my brand-new EEE-PC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n      A little late (but <q>better later than never<\/q>) I got myself an EEE-PC.<br \/>\n      First and important thing to do<br \/>\n      was to tell it to talk to me in english,<br \/>\n      because I hate it, when computers talk to me in <q>denglish<\/q><br \/>\n      (as this awful modern mixture of german and english is called,<br \/>\n      and yes, of course, I use it myself in spoken language and I hate it,<br \/>\n      but at least for written language I insist on avoiding it),<br \/>\n      so how to modify the default locale?<br \/>\n      And pls don&#8217;t you just modifiy <q>\/etc\/default\/locale<\/q>!\n    <\/p>\n<pre>\n$ sudo update-locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8\n    <\/pre>\n<p>\n      I found <a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.eeeuser.com\/\">wiki.eeeuser.com<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/forum.eeeuser.com\/\">forum.eeeuser.com<\/a>, most valuable!!!<br \/>\n      Really!!!<br \/>\n      Go to the wiki and make the best of it!!!\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n      I added a few Xandros package repositories, that got listed there.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n      I found two package managers: synaptic (GUI!!!) and aptitude (ncurses based),<br \/>\n      obviously you will always have to call them through <q>sudo<\/q>.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n      Sometimes you will nevertheless want to install a package on the command line,<br \/>\n      this is how it looks:\n    <\/p>\n<pre>\n$ sudo apt-get install YOUR_PACKAGE\n    <\/pre>\n<p>\n      These were a few of the packages I installed first this way:<br \/>\n      openssh-server, nxml-mode, rcs.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n      Actually the init script, that got installed with the openssh-server package is somehow flawed:\n    <\/p>\n<pre>\n$ sudo \/etc\/init.d\/ssh # it crashes and core dumps (almost)\n    <\/pre>\n<p>\n      So I have to run this instead for being able to access my EEE from my network:\n    <\/p>\n<pre>\n$ sudo \/usr\/sbin\/sshd\n    <\/pre>\n<p>\n      I certainly also installed GNU emacs,<br \/>\n      but I did so using one of the package managers.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n      I tried the descriptions for using bluetooth,<br \/>\n      and it looks like it works,<br \/>\n      but when I tried to connect to the Internet via bluetooth and one of my UMTS phones as modem,<br \/>\n      it didn&#8217;t work.<br \/>\n      But I successfully connected to the Internet, when I USB-wired that UMTS phone to the EEE.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n      The EEE-PC seriously comes with an up-to-date and updatable Firefox,<br \/>\n      and I installed <q>Adblock Plus<\/q> (and its most important filter subscriptions, so all the obnoxious ads stay away from my screen),<br \/>\n      <q>Sage<\/q> (my RSS reader),<br \/>\n      and <q>GMarks<\/q> (so I can access Google bookmarks).\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n      Initially the <q>Music Manager<\/q> refused to play my MP3-s,<br \/>\n      but I installed a few MP3-related packages through synaptic and everything was fine.<br \/>\n      Now I can play my MP3-s (that reside on a fat USB disk attached to my Linux NEO box)<br \/>\n      through my home WLAN,<br \/>\n      and I overly enjoy it.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n      Of course I switched to the <q>Full Desktop<\/q> aka  <q>Advanced Mode<\/q> in the meantime.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n      I followed the <a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.eeeuser.com\/howto:multiuser\">Multiuser mode HOWTO<\/a>,<br \/>\n      and now I have to login before X starts up,<br \/>\n      and user is not the only user any longer.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A little late (but better later than never) I got myself an EEE-PC.
