{"id":4603,"date":"2014-11-25T01:05:31","date_gmt":"2014-11-25T00:05:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.b.shuttle.de\/hayek\/hayek\/jochen\/wp\/blog-en\/?p=4603"},"modified":"2014-11-25T01:05:31","modified_gmt":"2014-11-25T00:05:31","slug":"working-with-an-epub-document-as-reader-expectations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.jochen.hayek.name\/blog-en\/2014\/11\/25\/working-with-an-epub-document-as-reader-expectations\/","title":{"rendered":"working with an epub document as a reader \u2013 expectations \u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>Does your reader \/ viewer software support you annotating, and highlighting, and bookmarking (that is your &#8220;reading state&#8221;), and quoting from documents to your blog, to Facebook, to Twitter?<\/li>\n<li>Where does your viewer keep your reading state?<\/li>\n<li>Keeping it inside the epub file has advantages (easier to share),<\/li>\n<li>keeping it apart has advantages as well (leaves the document itself untouched and intact).<\/li>\n<li>The viewer should at least make &#8220;the state&#8221; available to you (iBooks doesn&#8217;t, right?!?), and maybe assist you in administering it.<\/li>\n<li>\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em;line-height: 1.6em\">A few answers and comments:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>it appears to me, that <a href=\"http:\/\/manual.calibre-ebook.com\/viewer.html\">http:\/\/manual.calibre-ebook.com\/viewer.html<\/a> only supports bookmarks (and keeps them inside), but no annotating and no highlighting<\/li>\n<li>iBooks offers quite a few nice features, but it does not make the state available to you<\/li>\n<li>I don&#8217;t really mind keeping annotations and quotations in separate articles in a blog or a wiki<\/li>\n<li>bookmarks are nice to have (&#8220;how far have I gotten yet?&#8221;), but they are not too important, I don&#8217;t even mind losing them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em;line-height: 1.6em\">The killer question: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em;line-height: 1.6em\">what happens to your state, if you &#8220;upgrade&#8221; your document?<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I started reading epub documents (created \/ converted by calibre) on the Mac using iBooks.
