{"id":4678,"date":"2014-11-27T21:15:57","date_gmt":"2014-11-27T20:15:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.b.shuttle.de\/hayek\/hayek\/jochen\/wp\/blog-en\/?p=4678"},"modified":"2014-11-27T21:15:57","modified_gmt":"2014-11-27T20:15:57","slug":"big-data-berlin-v3-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.jochen.hayek.name\/blog-en\/2014\/11\/27\/big-data-berlin-v3-0\/","title":{"rendered":"attended tonight: Big Data, Berlin v3.0"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/Big-Data-Berlin\/events\/215366592\/\">http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/Big-Data-Berlin\/events\/215366592\/<\/a>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/Big-Data-Berlin\/events\/215366592\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.b.shuttle.de\/hayek\/hayek\/jochen\/wp\/blog-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/11\/600_416001112.jpeg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thomas Bestfleisch (&#8220;Solution Engineer&#8221; at Exasol AG, N\u00fcrnberg) held a talk titled &#8220;<em>A Tool for a Job<\/em>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xing.com\/profile\/Thomas_Bestfleisch\">https:\/\/www.xing.com\/profile\/Thomas_Bestfleisch<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the lawnmower pictures were &#8220;nice&#8221;, the analogy &#8220;impressive&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>the traditional DB systems are: Hadoop, MySQL, Postgres, Oracle<\/li>\n<li>the competitors &#8220;simply&#8221; extended these traditional DB systems<\/li>\n<li>some of them operate in main memory (&#8220;in core&#8221;), which is faster than operating on SSD, which is faster than operating on HD<\/li>\n<li>some of them use &#8220;columnar DBs&#8221; (i.e. time series \u2026), which is more suitable than record oriented or special (distributed) file system based DB systems<\/li>\n<li>some of them added concurrency, Thomas stated \u2013 that sounds odd, as concurrency should be made use of simply &#8220;everywhere&#8221;, that&#8217;s so basic<\/li>\n<li>so far a proper though a little superficial introduction<\/li>\n<li>Thomas is rather clear to understand, though initially he was a little nervous, not keeping a constant close distance to the microphone, but moving back and forth instead<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_data\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_data<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 for a deeper dive into the topic<\/li>\n<li>Thomas&#8217;s final statement: EXASOL (the product) is better then the competition, and it is way ahead of the competition, but Thomas did not explain, how they achieve that \u2013 no technical details at all<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ronert Obst (&#8220;Data Scientist&#8221; at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pivotal.io\/\">Pivotal.io<\/a>) held a talk titled\u00a0&#8220;<em>Smart Cars of Tomorrow: Learning Driving Patterns From Sensor Data<\/em>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xing.com\/profile\/Ronert_Obst\">https:\/\/www.xing.com\/profile\/Ronert_Obst<\/a><\/li>\n<li>a box connected to the car creates a stream of JSON data<\/li>\n<li>they are collecting the data, do some statistical analysis, they create predictions<\/li>\n<li>their database system is also way ahead the market \u2013 that&#8217;s what he says, they think themselves<\/li>\n<li>also: no explanation of their technical details<\/li>\n<li>his live presentation with &#8220;data plotting&#8221; screw up because of technical problems, but being an experienced guy, he was able to present a video as plan b \u2013 the video was &#8220;a little long&#8221; (actually &lt;3 min. in total), but he could have restricted the video to the essential part \u2013 well, you know how impatient we I.T. guys are<\/li>\n<li>Ronert is also rather clear to understand<\/li>\n<li>the project&#8217;s outcomes seem to get used by the U.S. insurance industry; they are getting at behavioural data of the drivers; drivers with such boxes and behaving well get better insurance tariffs; this is the U.S. \u2013 just image the massive information privacy violation for a minute!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both speakers are German native speakers, both do not mumble at all, excellent to understand after all, both may be great conference speakers a couple of years ahead, maybe with &#8220;a little&#8221; intense English training through living in an English speaking country for a couple of years. Having &#8220;lots of&#8221; non-native English speakers around in their offices isn&#8217;t really the same.
