Linux “watch” in Perl executable on AIX and Solaris and Mac OS X

The story:

• I got fed up with a local “loop” script,
• thinking there must be a standard utility for this,
• came across the watch utility while reading “Linux Server Hacks (xof2)“,
• and searched for “linux watch in perl“, 1st on DuckDuckGo (failing!), then on Google,
• got hold of watch.pl;
• it works on the current customer’s AIX – that’s what I wanted to see;
• and also on my MacBook running Mavericks

current disadvantage:

• only command line option it has: “-n secs“
