- whenever that happens, I “ssh root@diskstation”
- then the utility top helps me finding the afpd (the daemon proving AFS protocol access to the NAS file systems) in question
- the process gets softly killed (no, don’t use -9 on that!)
- you have to access / mount that share again through the OS X Finder
- and everything will be fine
- directories with lots of entries seem to intrigue an afpd (on my NAS) a lot to go wild
