In 1994 I had no doubt: it’s a PC with some Linux distro on it. And changing my mind was out of the question until not so long ago.
Now in 2010 I am doing things on a Samsung 17″ notebook running some openSUSE Linux, and I am doing things on a MacBook Pro with a 17″ screen.
I don’t want miss either of them. Well, the Samsung thingie’s resolution could be way better, but after my Sony thingie broke during my Leopard 2 main battle tank project, I couldn’t afford anything better than that, and the decision and the purchase had to happen within minutes rather than within days. Terrible pressure and no mercy with Linux folks over there at defense.
But now I do many, many things on that Snow Leopard thingie, and I terribly enjoy it and it honestly improved the quality of my life a lot. That’s what I wanted to state here and now.

I really enjoyed working with my design profession mate yesterday. He brought his MacBook with him, and I also learned from him, what the MacBook substitute for the scroll-wheel is: a two-finger wiping over the touchpad.

Photo Booth on OS X
It was time to change the pics on Facebook, Skype etc. again.
Wondered how to take a few pics using the MacBook.
Finally found Photo Booth.
Move the utility’s window to that corner of the screen, where you want your face to look at, otherwise your eyes look into the “wrong” direction. Sounds obvious, I know. -
activating the Meta key for the Terminal app under Mac OS X Snow Leopard
I just came across a description on how to do this, which seems far outdated and just not working. So I thought, I would let you know, how it really works with Snow Leopard.
Here you see the window, that pops up for Terminal’s Preferences menue entry:

a Mac keyboard is so different from a PC keyboard
It really takes me a while to accomodate with all that. Right now I just missed arrow key “accelerators” a lot, and I thought I give a few combinations a try. Guess what! The left and the right arrow key together with the cmd key work like Pos1 and End on a PC keyboard. Try yourself, what the alt key does! Isn’t that amazing?!!

Safari AdBlocker
Do you think, I am starting a fairy tale here? No, I’m not. Look it up on Apple’s list of public downloads for Mac OS X. The link there is broken (right now), but read it and bend it! It points you to sweetpproductions.com, there you want to look for the Safari AdBlocker (maybe this link will still be functional). It works with Firefox AdBlock Plus filter subscritions.
Question is, how long it will take, until the iPhone’s Safari can be made to block ads as well. I mean, an iPhone is an OS X derivative using Cocoa, so I wonder how hard that will be.
Well, now don’t you complain here, if you find browsing without ads a poor experience!

pipe symbol at Apple keyboard
there is that nice article on where to find the “pipe symbol” / “pipe symbol” on an Apple keyboard. of course nowadays with Snow Leopard or “just” Leopard that’s all different. but it still (with a little fancy and curiousity) helped me finding out, how to get to that thing.
in short: System Preferences / Language + Text / Input Sources / Show Input menu in menu bar / Show Keyboard Viewer.
there you play a little with combinations of the shift key, the function key, and just try yourself!alright, I actually completed this article — at the cost of letting my SO wait for my call to the gym. sorry for that!
